Velcro Maintenance: How to Clean Shin Guards and Gear
The Velcro Cleaning Protocol
To clean Velcro on shin guards and kill bacteria, you must first remove physical debris like hair and lint using a stiff brush or a specialized Velcro rake. Once clear, the most effective way to eliminate pathogens trapped in the hooks and loops is to mist the area with a non-corrosive HOCl (hypochlorous acid) spray. Unlike alcohol or bleach, HOCl kills 99.9% of odors and bacteria—including staph and ringworm—without damaging the adhesive bond or the structural integrity of the Velcro.
Why Velcro is a "Pathogen Trap"
In Muay Thai and MMA, Velcro is everywhere. The tiny hooks and loops that hold your shin guards in place are excellent at catching sweat and skin cells. This creates a micro-environment where bacteria can survive even after the rest of the guard has dried.
- Clear the Hooks: Use a fine-tooth comb to pull out gym floor lint and hair. This allows your disinfectant to reach the "base" of the Velcro.
- Disinfect Post-Session: Mist your straps immediately after training. Pathogens colonize faster in damp Velcro.
- Air-Dry Open: Never store gear with the Velcro closed. Leave the straps wide open to allow moisture to evaporate from the inner hooks.
- Avoid Harsh Solvents: Bleach and heavy detergents can melt the plastic hooks over time, causing your guards to fly off during sparring.
The Rest Round™ Advantage
Standard wipes can't get deep into the Velcro loops. A mist-based delivery system like Rest Round™ ensures the HOCl reaches every crevice, neutralizing the ammonia-producing bacteria that cause gear to smell and skin to break out.
Proper gear maintenance isn't just about smell; it's about longevity. Clean Velcro sticks better and lasts longer, saving you money on gear in the long run.
DEFEND YOUR GEAR
