Training Acne: Why Grapplers Get It and How to Get Rid of It

You shower after training. You wash your face. You're doing everything right — and you're still breaking out along your jaw, neck and the back of your arms every time you have a heavy week on the mats.

This isn't regular acne. It's training acne, and treating it like regular acne is why it keeps coming back.

What Is Training Acne (Acne Mechanica)?

Acne mechanica is breakouts caused by mechanical factors: friction, pressure, heat and sweat — not hormones, not diet, not stress (though those can make it worse).

In combat sports it shows up because:

  • Gi collars and rashguard necklines constantly rub the same skin zones
  • Sweat sits against your skin for the entire training session
  • Heat from training accelerates P. acnes bacteria growth on the skin surface
  • Mat contact transfers bacteria directly to broken skin

The most common locations: jawline, neck, back of arms, shoulders and upper back. Exactly where your gear makes contact and where you get gripped.

Why Your Regular Face Wash Isn't Fixing It

Most acne face washes target sebum overproduction or hormonal acne. By the time you shower, bacteria from training have already had 30–60 minutes to settle into your pores and any micro-abrasions on your skin. The damage window is right after training — not an hour later in the shower.

The Fix: Close the Window Before Bacteria Get In

Spray immediately after stepping off the mats — before changing, before the drive home, before the shower. Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) at 300 PPM kills P. acnes bacteria on contact. pH-matched to your skin (5.5–6), alcohol-free, safe for daily face use.

The protocol:

  1. Step off the mats
  2. Spray jaw, neck, arms and friction zones immediately
  3. Let air dry (30 seconds)
  4. Shower normally

Most athletes see training acne drop significantly within 2–3 weeks.

Other Things That Help

Wash your gear every session. Your rashguard is a bacteria incubator. Wearing it twice without washing transfers the same bacteria straight back to your skin.

Change immediately after training. The longer bacteria-saturated fabric sits against your skin, the worse it gets.

Keep hands off your face during training. Every time you wipe sweat mid-roll, you're transferring mat bacteria to your pores.

Eat probiotics. Your skin and gut microbiome are connected. Kefir, kimchi and yoghurt all help.
