Recovery Timeline: How Long Does it Take for Staph to Clear?

Staph Recovery Statistics

Typically, a staph infection begins to clear within 48 to 72 hours after starting appropriate antibiotics. However, a full course of treatment usually lasts 7 to 14 days. For combat sports athletes, you are generally considered non-contagious after 48 hours of antibiotic use, provided the wound has stopped draining and is dried over. However, most BJJ and MMA coaches require a full 7 to 10-day layoff or a medical clearance before allowing an athlete back on the mats to prevent gym-wide outbreaks.

The Three Phases of Staph Healing

In Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai, we are often eager to return to training, but rushing back can lead to a secondary infection or infecting your training partners.

Phase 1: Antibiotic Activation (Days 1–3) The redness should stop spreading and the localized heat should decrease. This is when the bacteria are being neutralized.
Phase 2: Wound Closure (Days 4–7) The lesion will begin to scab and dry out. Do not pick the scab. This layer protects the new skin forming underneath.
Phase 3: The Full Course (Days 7–14) Even if the skin looks perfect, you must finish your entire bottle of antibiotics to prevent the remaining bacteria from becoming resistant (MRSA).

Don't Just Recover—Protect

A staph infection is a sign that your skin's natural barrier was compromised. Once you are cleared to roll, your skin is still tender and prone to re-injury. Prevention is faster than recovery.

Ensure that your return to the mats is permanent by using Rest Round™ Combat Gear & Skin Spray immediately after every session. It provides a non-irritating layer of Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) to flush out microscopic mat burns before they turn into another 14-day layoff.
