Impetigo After Training: Spotting the First Signs

The First Signs of Impetigo

The first signs of impetigo in combat athletes are small, itchy red sores that quickly rupture and ooze. Within 24 hours, these sores develop a characteristic honey-colored crust or yellowish scab. Impetigo is a highly contagious bacterial infection caused by Staphylococcus or Streptococcus, commonly spread through skin-to-skin contact in sports like BJJ and wrestling. Unlike a standard rash, impetigo sores are often painless but can spread rapidly across the face and limbs.

How to Identify "School Sores" on the Mats

While often associated with children, impetigo is an aggressive "mat plague" that can sideline an entire MMA gym if not caught early. Look for these two main variations:

  • Non-bullous Impetigo: This is the most common form. It starts as red sores around the nose and mouth that quickly turn into golden-brown crusts.
  • Bullous Impetigo: More common in athletes training in humid environments. It presents as larger, fluid-filled blisters that are clear at first and then turn cloudy.

Is it Mat Burn or Impetigo?

Mat burn stings and stays raw. Impetigo crusts and spreads. If you notice a "scab" that seems to be getting wider or new "crusty" spots appearing on other parts of your body, you are highly contagious and must leave the mats.

Proactive Combat Hygiene

Pathogenic bacteria like Staph and Strep thrive in the porous surface of training mats. To prevent these bacteria from colonizing on your skin, use Rest Round™ Combat Gear & Skin Spray immediately after every session. Our HOCl-based formula is engineered to neutralize bacteria before they can form the sores and scabs associated with impetigo.

DEFEND YOUR TRAINING

Don't let bacterial infections pause your progress. Use Rest Round™ Combat Gear & Skin Spray to maintain elite hygiene protocols.
